The Presidency’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said on Sunday that President Bola Tinubu “can rule Nigeria from anywhere,” dismissing calls for the head of state to return to Abuja after an extended vacation that exceeded the official three‑week leave period.
Critics and opposition figures have voiced concern over the president’s prolonged absence, noting that he was expected to be back in the country last week. They have asked for clarification on his whereabouts, while many Nigerians have expressed unease about the lack of a visible presidential presence in the capital.
Onanuga responded that “Nigeria’s President is hale and hearty. He has been on a working vacation, which he is perfectly entitled to.” He added that “in this digital age, he does not need to be physically present in Abuja to do the work for which he was elected in 2023.”
According to the adviser, Tinubu has been “meeting investors in France” and recently “facilitated a $7 billion deep‑sea port in Ogun Waterside, an initiative of the Ogun State Government.” The statement implies that the president’s engagements abroad are part of his official duties.
