Mekelle, the capital of Ethiopia’s Tigray region, is reported to be “out of cash” as fighting in the area escalates, a resident told the BBC.
The resident said the city remains calm on the streets, but the atmosphere is tense and people are stressed following the recent outbreak of hostilities in the region.
Fighting in Tigray, which has experienced intermittent conflict since 2020, has intensified again, prompting concerns about the availability of basic services and financial resources for the local population.
According to the resident, the shortage of cash is affecting everyday transactions, limiting residents’ ability to purchase food, pay for transport and meet other essential needs, thereby adding to the overall stress in the community.
Humanitarian organisations have warned that the renewed clashes could exacerbate the already fragile humanitarian situation in Tigray, underscoring the need for urgent assistance to address cash shortages and other basic needs.
