U.S. Representative Anna Paulina Luna used her X account on September 14 to condemn a series of violent attacks and mass abductions reported in Nigeria, urging that “this needs to be stopped.” Luna tagged Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Michael Waltz in the post, highlighting the escalating security crisis in the West African nation.
Luna said armed groups had targeted Christian communities in Plateau State, claiming civilians faced a “serious threat” as security forces struggled to contain the violence. She alleged that a pastor and his church secretary were shot dead on their way to worship, that five Christians were ambushed while traveling in a vehicle, that a civilian guard was killed outside his home, and that a man and his son were beaten and left critically injured.
The lawmaker also referenced the reported abduction of more than 100 residents from Maburya, a community in the Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State. The raid, which took place on September 13, left the victims missing, according to Luna’s statement.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the Maburya incident, saying attackers released elderly people, pregnant women and nursing mothers before taking the remaining residents. Police and military tactical teams have been deployed to the area, and “rescue efforts are intensified,” the force said.
Luna added that the local news outlet Truth Nigeria had issued warnings before the attacks, underscoring concerns that the violence could have been anticipated. Her post called for immediate action to protect civilians and halt the ongoing assaults.
