Iranian officials have publicly rebuked Canada for failing to condemn former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threat to “annihilate” Iran, accusing the Canadian government of soft‑peddling the remark.
Speaking to reporters, Iranian commentator Mohammad Baqaei said that Canadian Finance Minister Bill Carney “chose to appease Washington by reframing a threat to ‘annihilate’ Iran as merely ‘speaking the language of war.’”
Trump’s statement, made during a televised address, warned that the United States would take decisive action to destroy Iran’s nuclear program and its regional influence, language that Tehran says amounts to a direct threat of destruction.
Carney, in a separate comment, described the president’s remarks as “war‑like language” rather than an explicit policy declaration, a phrasing Baqaei argued downplays the seriousness of the threat.
Canada, a close ally of the United States and a member of NATO, has traditionally aligned its foreign‑policy stance with Washington, a fact Tehran highlighted as evidence of “appeasement” toward U.S. pressure on Iran.
