Three civilians were shot dead in their homes in Ekona, a locality in Cameroon's Southwest region, after an armed group entered the town at night. Local witnesses directly accuse a militia led by John Eko Ewume, known as “Moja Moja”, of carrying out the killings.
According to the Cameroon News Agency, a commando of armed men broke into residences in the Electric Line neighbourhood under cover of darkness, killing three people whose identities have not yet been confirmed by authorities.
“Moja Moja,” a former member of the BIR militia, had recently been blamed for sabotaging a local electric transformer, an act he allegedly justified by accusing nearby residents of colluding with separatist fighters. The figure previously served a prison sentence in 2024 before resurfacing on the public scene.
The incident adds to a growing wave of violence that has plagued Cameroon's anglophone regions, where clashes between separatist groups and various militias have left civilians increasingly vulnerable.
Authorities and observers say the tragedy underscores the urgent need to restore the rule of law and provide security for civilian populations in the crisis‑hit Southwest province.
