Students were forced to part with their phones, cash and other values as armed hoodlums invaded the female hostel of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Gubi Campus, Bauchi, in the early hours of Monday.
It was learnt that the attackers, who stormed the hostel around 2am, were armed with machetes, knives and other dangerous weapons.
A witness who pleaded anonymity confirmed that more than 10 rooms were ransacked by the assailants, who carted away at least 50 phones.
A student who refused to part with her phone was seriously injured by the armed hoodlums, the witness disclosed.
According to the witness, the incident has caused anxiety among many students as the Gubi Campus lies near thick bushes.
Confirming the incident, Director of Information and Public Relations of the university, Zailani Bappa said the situation was under control.
He said the university’s Vice-Chancellor has visited the hostel, sympathised with affected students and reassured them of the management’s commitment to their safety.
“The incident has been reported to the police. They have deployed personnel to the campus, taken statements from the affected students and commenced investigation,” he said.
Meanwhile, some affected students have urged the institution to replace the stolen items, arguing that its failure to deploy enough security personnel to the campus contributed to the incident.
