Mrs Nonye Soludo, the First Lady of Anambra State, has formally denied that former governor and political rival Peter Obi is the godfather of one of her sons. In a statement issued by the media assistant to the First Lady, Mr Dan Ezeigwe, the Soludos clarified that the claim circulating on social media is untrue.
According to the statement, a viral video shows Mr Obi saying he was the godfather of a Soludo son. The First Lady’s office urged the public, media and all concerned to disregard any impression that Mr Obi holds that role.
“It is possible that Mr Peter Obi simply misspoke in the course of making his remarks. However, given the widespread circulation of the video and the enquiries it has generated, it is important that the record be set straight,” the statement read.
The clarification also outlined the actual godparent relationships between the families. Dr Nonye Soludo is the confirmation godmother to Mr Obi’s daughter, while Mrs Margaret Obi is the baptismal godmother to one of Professor Chukwuma Soludo’s daughters. Neither Mr Obi nor Professor Soludo has served as a godparent to the other’s children.
The statement noted that the families maintain a cordial relationship and that the misrepresentation of their ties is unwarranted. It also mentioned that the First Lady’s office has received several calls and enquiries seeking clarification on the matter.
Peter Obi, who served as governor of Anambra State before the current administration, remains a prominent political figure and a rival of Governor Chukwuma Soludo. The clarification aims to set the record straight amid the widespread circulation of the misleading video.
