Soldiers from Sector 2 of the Joint Task Force North West, operating under Operation Fansan Yamma, rescued 23 kidnapped civilians, foiled multiple terrorist attacks and arrested four suspected members of the Lakurawa insurgent group in a series of coordinated actions across Sokoto State on Sunday.
Rescue at Sabon Gari, Wurno LGA
Following an armed incursion on the Sabon Gari community in Wurno Local Government Area, troops engaged the attackers, forced them to withdraw and freed six hostages. One civilian who was shot during the clash was taken to a medical facility for treatment.
Ambushes and Further Rescues
Intelligence led troops to set an ambush on the Sabon Birni–Takatsaba Road near Chabe Biyu, where they confronted terrorists and drove them into disarray. Later the same day, a distress call on the Isa–Kwanar Isa–Shinkafi Road prompted another engagement, resulting in the liberation of 17 more kidnapped civilians; one of the rescued victims, who suffered a fracture, was evacuated to General Hospital, Isa.
Arrests and Livestock Recovery
In Illela LGA, soldiers acted on a tip about suspected Lakurawa members moving rustled cattle from Sarma Village. A snap checkpoint was established, leading to the arrest of four suspects and the seizure of six cows, all of which are now in military custody pending investigation.
“The latest successes underscore the effectiveness of the intelligence‑driven and proactive operations being conducted by troops of Sector 2 to disrupt terrorist activities, rescue kidnapped civilians and deny terrorists freedom of movement across the Joint Operations Area,” said Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force.
Authorities say the operation demonstrates the continued commitment of security forces to protect civilians and curb insurgent activity in the region, while efforts to track down additional Lakurawa members remain underway.
