Opposition leaders gathered under the G‑100 coalition announced yesterday that the search for a single consensus presidential candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu in Nigeria’s 2027 general election has made “significant progress,” according to the coalition’s statement.
The coalition, which is being coordinated by political figure Lukman, said its members are intensifying talks to narrow the field of potential contenders. The statement did not name a final candidate but highlighted that senior opposition figures are actively engaged in the process.
Among those reportedly involved in the discussions are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former presidential candidate Peter Obi and former governor Duke, along with other senior politicians who have expressed interest in a united front against the incumbent administration.
President Bola Tinubu, who was elected in 2023, is expected to seek re‑election in 2027, and the opposition’s effort to present a single challenger reflects a broader strategy to avoid vote‑splitting that has historically benefited the ruling party.
The G‑100 coalition said it will continue consultations in the coming weeks, aiming to finalize a consensus candidate before the official party primaries commence, and will keep the public informed of any further developments.
