The Office of the Vice President in Abuja has issued a clarification regarding remarks made by Vice President Kashim Shettima about the support President Bola Tinubu received from northern governors. The statement, released by Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Communication, Mr. Stanley Nkwocha, aims to contextualize Shettima’s comments concerning the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary.
According to the official statement, the Vice President’s specific reference to six northern governors who “believed in and supported” President Tinubu pertained strictly to political consultations and alignments that took place before the APC presidential primary in June 2022.
It was not a comment on the position of northern APC governors following President Tinubu’s emergence as the party’s candidate, nor was it intended to question their support during the 2023 presidential election.
The office emphasized that after the presidential primary, APC governors in the North rallied around the party’s candidate. They played significant roles in the campaign and electoral efforts that ultimately led to President Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 general election.
In the statement, the Vice President’s office expressed that Shettima holds northern governors and other APC leaders in high regard, recognizing their individual and collective contributions to the party’s success. The office stated that Shettima regrets any interpretation of his remarks that may have suggested a lack of support from these leaders.
The clarification further noted that the Vice President appreciates the professionalism of the Nigerian media. As the country approaches another political season, the office urged continued accuracy and proper context in the reporting of public remarks.
