Speaking to the Associated Press during the event, Stringer said the protracted conflict has emboldened Russia to consider bolder actions, suggesting a shift in Moscow’s strategic calculus. He highlighted that the longer the war drags on, the more likely Putin is to gamble with actions that could provoke a NATO response.
Several European officials have echoed these concerns, warning that Russia is already planning attacks designed to probe the alliance’s resolve. They cited recent sabotage and espionage incidents as evidence that Moscow is testing the limits of NATO’s Article 5 defence guarantee.
NATO, a collective security pact that obliges member states to consider an attack on one as an attack on all, includes Estonia as a frontline member bordering Russia’s sphere of influence. The alliance has repeatedly affirmed its commitment to defending member states, a stance that is now being scrutinised in light of the alleged Russian provocations.
The warnings come as the Ukraine war shows few signs of abating, raising questions about how NATO and its members will respond if Russia escalates its activities beyond covert operations. Stringer’s remarks underscore the alliance’s vigilance and the importance of maintaining a unified deterrent posture.
