The coastal erosion that has divided North Beach has put the rail line that runs along the shoreline at risk. In an effort to protect the line, authorities installed a series of rock piles along the coast.
Local residents argue that the rock structure is making the problem worse, citing increased erosion on the beach and a loss of sand that normally nourishes the shoreline.
They call for additional sand to be added to the beach to counteract the loss and to help stabilize the area against rising sea levels.
San Clemente’s situation illustrates the broader challenges coastal communities face as sea levels continue to rise, threatening both infrastructure and natural habitats along the California coast.
