Judicial police in Guinea‑Bissau raided the offices of a group of vaccine researchers, seizing several doses of hepatitis B vaccine, officials announced on Facebook.
The raid comes amid a dispute over studies involving African newborns that have attracted international attention. The researchers, who have been praised by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services secretary and environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr., are at the centre of the controversy.
Funding for the research has totalled $3.2 million, with $1.6 million provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the remainder matched by the Pershing Square Foundation and the Bluebell Foundation.
Details of the investigations and the reasons for the seizure have not yet been released, but the incident underscores growing scrutiny of vaccine trials conducted in West Africa.
