California Democratic Representative Ro Khanna told CBS’s “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” that President Trump should negotiate an international agreement on artificial intelligence with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their upcoming meeting.
Khanna said the agreement should provide for international monitoring of AI, with checks on data centres that can determine whether a model is being used for interference or training.
He added that the tools used for monitoring must be “enforceable and verifiable.”
“When President Trump meets his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping this week, Mr. Trump needs to make an ‘international agreement’ with Xi that should include international monitoring on AI,” Khanna said on the program.
The remarks come amid growing bipartisan concern over AI’s impact on national security and the need for global standards to prevent misuse.
