The Australian federal government will deregister the Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) in October after concerns that the course is being used by “non‑genuine” students to remain in the country.
The decision, announced in early September, follows findings that the diploma is offered by close to 450 institutions and currently has more than 15,000 students enrolled, with over 40,000 registered for future enrolment after completing a different vocational course.
Government officials cited fears that the diploma was being “misused by shonks” – a term used to describe individuals who enrol in courses to extend their stay in Australia.
In response, private colleges have begun offering last‑minute discounts to rush students into the diploma, despite the impending deregistration.
