President Donald Trump is set to unveil a $15 billion steel plant in Iowa on Monday, a project the White House claims will be the largest steel facility ever built in the United States. The plant is expected to create 1,750 permanent jobs in the state and generate between 5,000 and 6,000 construction jobs during its first phase.
The Iowa complex will initially produce 7.5 million tonnes of steel a year, with plans to expand to 10 million tonnes once fully operational. According to the administration, that output would equal roughly one‑tenth of the total U.S. steel production recorded last year.
The plant will rely on a fully domestic supply chain, using iron ore mined at Mesabi Metallics’ newly constructed mine in Minnesota. The Minnesota operation is slated to produce 7.5 million tonnes annually and create about 350 permanent jobs, with commercial pellet production expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 after a ramp‑up period.
White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said the announcement “underscores the President’s historic efforts to revitalize the U.S. steel industry—supporting local communities, strengthening supply chains, and protecting our national security.” The plant will also be able to produce high‑grade steel for defense‑sector requirements, a point the administration stresses as part of a broader push to secure critical infrastructure.
Trump’s reindustrialisation agenda has highlighted the role of tariffs in encouraging domestic manufacturing. Last year the president doubled tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to 50%, arguing that protecting U.S. producers would rebuild an industry vital to the economy and national security.
Mesabi Metallics, which emerged from bankruptcy after a long history of financing challenges, has already begun mining and commissioning work at its Minnesota site. The White House estimates the first phase of the Iowa plant and the Minnesota mine together represent nearly $18 billion in investment and will generate approximately $95 billion in economic activity during construction and the first decade of operation.
