Cameroon’s Minister of Public Health, Dr Malachie Manaouda, has convened an emergency meeting of the Strategic Health Emergencies Committee after Nigeria confirmed its first case of Ebola.

The crisis meeting was called to evaluate the potential impact of the outbreak on Cameroon, which shares a long border with Nigeria, and to coordinate a rapid response if needed.

Officials will review surveillance data, border health controls and the capacity of health facilities to detect and manage any possible transmission of the virus.

Ebola is a viral hemorrhagic fever with a high fatality rate that has caused several major outbreaks in West Africa over the past two decades. Nigeria’s health authorities are working to contain the disease, and neighboring countries are closely monitoring the situation.

Cameroon’s health ministry said it will continue to monitor developments in Nigeria and stand ready to implement any additional public‑health measures required to protect its population.
