The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested three individuals on charges of illegal firearm fabrication and possession, while separately detaining a 26-year-old man for the alleged rape of a mentally ill woman in the state. The arrests, disclosed by Police Public Relations Officer SP Nafiu Habib on Saturday, are part of broader efforts to curb arms proliferation and sexual offences in Bauchi.
In Misau Local Government Area, operatives intercepted Abubakar Ahmad, alias Tino, on September 25, 2026, while he was in possession of a locally fabricated pistol loaded with a live cartridge. Preliminary investigations revealed that Ahmad was attempting to transfer the firearm to Tijjani Yakubu, a 35-year-old resident of the same address who was already in a correctional centre on charges of criminal conspiracy, theft, and receiving stolen property.
During interrogation, Yakubu allegedly admitted ownership of the pistol, stating he had given it to Ahmad for safekeeping. He further disclosed that he had purchased the weapon from Bappah Kawu, a 48-year-old welder from Tashar Masu, Misau.
Police subsequently arrested Kawu, who allegedly confessed to fabricating and selling the pistol to Yakubu for N30,000. A search of Kawu’s workshop led to the recovery of two locally fabricated dane guns, along with tools and materials used for firearm fabrication, including a hacksaw, files, and long iron pipes. The three suspects remain in custody as the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry.
In a separate incident in Gamawa Local Government Area, police arrested Lukman Alhaji Nasiru, 26, of Garin Malam Village, over an alleged rape involving a 50-year-old mentally ill woman. The victim’s younger brother reported the incident at the Gamawa Divisional Police Headquarters on September 25, stating that Nasiru had lured the woman to the outskirts of Garin Malam on September 22, where the alleged unlawful sexual intercourse took place.
Following the report, Nasiru was arrested, and both he and the victim were taken to the General Hospital in Gamawa for medical examination. The police stated that investigations into the alleged rape are ongoing.
Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu warned that the command would not tolerate illegal possession or fabrication of firearms, nor sexual offences. He urged residents to provide credible information to law enforcement to assist in these efforts.
