Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has denied authoring a viral letter addressed to the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, amid a heated dispute over Anambra State’s finances in Nigeria. The alleged document, dated 19 September 2026, surfaced on social media and prompted Obi’s public rebuttal on Saturday.
Content of the purported letter
The letter, titled “The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak”, criticised Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s claims about liabilities incurred during Obi’s tenure as governor and called for the state’s financial records to be opened for scrutiny. It read:
Let the records be opened. Let the books be examined. Let every legitimate question be answered with evidence.
Obi’s stance on Anambra’s alleged debts
Obi has repeatedly challenged the Anambra State Government’s assertion that his administration left unpaid loans, insisting that no salaries, pensions or contractor obligations remained outstanding when he left office on 17 March 2014. He also warned he would suspend his campaign if credible evidence contradicted his position.
State government’s counter‑claim
On Wednesday, the Anambra State Government said eight external loan facilities contracted during Obi’s administration were still outstanding, with a combined balance of N127.4 billion as of 30 June 2026, based on figures from the Debt Management Office.
Obi disowns the letter
In a statement, Obi described the document as “entirely false, malicious, and a fabrication by mischievous elements” and said the signature was forged. He urged the public and media to disregard the spurious publication, adding that his focus remains on “national development, accountability and building a better future for our people – never on cheap fabrications.”
