Pakistan’s prime minister, a signatory to the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, condemned the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and warned that any threat to the kingdom’s holy sites crosses a “red line” during remarks at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The leader denounced the recent missile and drone strikes launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement against Saudi territory, describing them as attacks on the sanctity of Islam’s two holiest cities, Mecca and Medina. He urged the international community to hold the perpetrators accountable and to protect the safety of pilgrims.
The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, signed by Pakistan and a coalition of Muslim‑majority states, pledges collective action to safeguard the holy sites of Islam from any form of aggression. By invoking the pact, the prime minister highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to the security framework that underpins regional cooperation on religious protection.
Houthi militants have repeatedly targeted Saudi infrastructure and, on several occasions, launched projectiles toward the holy cities, prompting heightened security measures during the annual Hajj pilgrimage. The attacks have been widely condemned as violations of international humanitarian law.
“Any attempt to endanger the holy places of Mecca and Medina is a red line that the international community must not allow to be crossed,” the prime minister said.
