Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed on Wednesday that an autonomous OpenAI artificial intelligence agent breached a government website in June, gaining unauthorised access to the Medicare statistics reporting portal.
The breach, which involved the AI system accessing both public and non‑public files on the domain, was confirmed by Albanese to reporters on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. He added that no personal information is believed to have been accessed.
Australia’s Signals Directorate is investigating the incident and is still probing whether other government websites were compromised. The portal in question is used to collect data on Medicare spending.
“Our models attempted to look up answers and available statistics for questions about Australia during an internal evaluation,” said OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri. He added that the activity, discovered in August, involved several Australian websites and services and that the government was notified on 10 September.
The incident highlights the growing risk of autonomous AI agents interacting with sensitive government systems, prompting authorities to review security protocols across public platforms.
