One month after catastrophic floods swept through Nepal, officials say 5,285 people remain missing and more than 1,100 are still housed in temporary holding centres.
The floods, which hit the Himalayan nation in late August, caused widespread devastation across several districts, destroying homes, infrastructure and agricultural land. Nepal, a landlocked country in South Asia, is prone to severe monsoon‑related flooding each year.
Relief agencies continue to operate emergency shelters, with over 1,100 displaced individuals currently staying in holding centres while authorities assess damage and provide basic necessities such as food, water and medical care.
Search and rescue teams are still combing the affected areas, but the rugged terrain and ongoing landslides have hampered efforts to locate those missing. Local authorities have urged families to register missing relatives and have appealed for continued support from the international community.
The situation remains precarious as Nepal grapples with the humanitarian fallout of the disaster, and officials say the search for the missing will continue for as long as needed.
