The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confirmed that 48 people have died after consuming a suspected contaminated mixture of traditional herbal medicine and alcohol in Ondo State, Nigeria, an incident first reported in early September 2026.
The fatalities occurred across several communities in the Odigbo Local Government Area, including New Town, Odole, Okele, Orita Odigbo, Araromi‑Obu and Oniparaga. Health officials said additional victims were admitted to hospitals or placed under intensive medical observation.
Initial reports from investigating officials recorded 31 deaths – 20 in Odigbo town and 11 in Araromi‑Obu – before the death toll rose as the investigation progressed. NAFDAC now confirms a total of 48 deaths and 182 people in critical condition.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and pray for the repose of those who have died,” said Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, Director‑General of NAFDAC, in a statement to journalists. “Laboratory tests and investigations are ongoing to identify the toxic substances that may have been present in the substances consumed by the victims.”
Authorities from NAFDAC, the state health ministry and other relevant agencies continue to investigate the source of the contamination, urging the public to exercise caution with unregulated herbal preparations while the toxic agents are being identified.
