Mr. and Mrs. Olalusi of the Our Lady Mother and Queen Catholic Church in Badore, Ajah, have been declared the winners of the 10th edition of the Bishop Alfred Adewale Martins Bible, Catholic Faith, Family Project and Catechism competition. The couple from the Lekki Region secured the grand prize, a Toyota Camry, after outperforming other finalists in a test of religious knowledge.
The competition, which assessed participants on scripture—specifically the Gospel of Matthew and the Letters of St Paul—as well as Catholic catechism and doctrine, concluded with a grand finale held at St Leo’s Catholic Church in Ikeja. The event was organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos through its Religious Education Department and Laity Council, in collaboration with the Knights of St John International, Lagos Grand Commandery.
Finalists for the grand finale were selected from the four regions of the Archdiocese of Lagos: Ikeja, Lekki, Lagos Mainland, and Badagry. These representatives advanced to the final stage after clearing preliminary contests at the parish, deanery, and regional levels. The structure of the competition was detailed by Rev. Fr. Emeka Okeke, who noted that the process begins at the parish level before progressing through the higher administrative tiers of the Archdiocese.
In addition to the grand prize, other finalists received significant financial and material rewards. The first runner-up, representing the Ikeja Region, was awarded N1 million. The second runner-up from the Lagos Mainland Region received N700,000 and a 4.5KVA Seaman generator, while the third runner-up was given N400,000.
Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, the Archbishop of Lagos, celebrated the Holy Mass and supervised the proceedings. He congratulated the winners and urged other parishioners to participate in the annual Catholic family competition. Col. Greg Ugwunze, Chairman of the Planning Committee of the Catechisation Project, stated that the initiative was conceived in response to the Church’s call for renewed evangelisation.
