The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested five people in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, on suspicion of buying and preparing dead cattle for human consumption.
The group includes 42‑year‑old Nancy Benedict, who is said to have purchased two carcasses for N100,000 before the operation was uncovered.
NSCDC Public Relations Officer Bala Garba said the command had received intelligence about the activity and placed Benedict under discreet surveillance for two weeks. “We got intelligence about her activities and followed her discreetly for two weeks. We eventually saw her purchasing two carcasses for N100,000, with the intention of processing the meat for human consumption,” Garba told reporters.
After the surveillance operation, the five suspects were taken into custody and the NSCDC began an investigation to determine the source and condition of the carcasses, how the meat was intended to be processed, and whether any of it had already been sold or supplied to the public.
The alleged sale of uninspected meat has raised food‑safety concerns, as animals that die without veterinary inspection can pose health risks if their meat is consumed.
NSCDC said it would continue its investigation and take appropriate action based on its findings.
