The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced an upward review of performance bonuses and instant cash rewards for Team Nigeria athletes competing at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, as part of efforts to boost morale and reward outstanding performances.
NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, disclosed the revised incentive package, saying the decision was reached after consultations with the Commission’s Director General to further motivate the Nigerian contingent.
Under the new reward structure, gold medal winners will receive a total of $10,000, comprising $5,000 as an instant cash reward and $5,000 paid directly into their accounts. Silver medalists will earn $5,000 in total, with $2,000 paid instantly and $3,000 transferred to their accounts, while bronze medalists will receive $3,000, made up of $1,000 instant cash and $2,000 paid into their accounts.
Dikko explained that the original package for gold medalists was $8,000, consisting of $3,000 instant cash and $5,000 paid into their accounts, but was increased after his visit to Team Nigeria’s camp in Aberdeen.
“After meeting the team in Aberdeen, I decided to increase the instant cash reward to $5,000 as added motivation for all gold medal hopefuls,” he said.
The NSC chairman also clarified that the three Nigerian athletes who won gold medals on Friday had already received $10,000 each, contrary to earlier reports indicating they were entitled to $8,000. He added that the two gold medalists from Saturday and the silver medal winners had also received their instant cash rewards of $5,000 and $2,000 respectively.
In addition to athletes’ incentives, Dikko announced that coaches whose athletes win gold medals will receive $5,000 as performance bonuses.
He further disclosed that athletes are receiving a daily allowance of $200, while coaches are paid $250 per day throughout the Games.
According to him, the Commission has also introduced discretionary rewards in exceptional circumstances.
He cited the on-the-spot cash incentive given to Rilwan Idris, which he said helped inspire the athlete to upgrade a potential bronze medal finish to a gold medal victory.
The NSC maintained that the enhanced welfare and incentive package underscores its commitment to ensuring Team Nigeria remains adequately motivated and supported throughout the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
