The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is currently awaiting technical assessment reports from two Chinese firms before it can move forward with investment agreements for the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries.
The NNPC, the state‑owned oil company, has engaged the Chinese firms to conduct detailed technical evaluations of the two refineries. Once the assessments are completed, the company will use the findings to negotiate and finalize investment deals aimed at reviving the plants.
Port Harcourt and Warri are among Nigeria’s largest refining facilities. Both have struggled with operational challenges and reduced output in recent years, prompting the government to seek external expertise and capital to restore their productivity.
Reviving the refineries is part of a broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s domestic refining capacity and reduce reliance on imported petroleum products. The NNPC’s partnership with Chinese firms reflects a growing trend of international collaboration in the country’s oil sector.
The NNPC will review the technical assessment reports once they are received and, if the findings are favourable, will proceed with the investment agreements to bring the refineries back into full operation.
