President Bola Tinubu has announced that Nigerians will begin to pay lower transport fares from 1 October 2026, as part of the National Affordable Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Transit Programme. The pledge was disclosed on Saturday in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Implementation framework
Following a meeting with the governors of all 36 states on 27 August, the president and the governors agreed on a clear objective to reduce transportation costs. An implementation committee for the programme has been set up under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, with Governor Abdul‑Rahman Abdul‑Razaq serving as chair.
Stakeholder involvement
The committee, together with the PI‑CNG & EV initiative, state governments and other critical stakeholders, is working to identify priority transport corridors, decide on appropriate interventions and put the necessary arrangements in place.
Why the push now
The effort is being accelerated amid the current global energy crisis, which has heightened the urgency of making affordable fuel options available for public transport.
