Nigeria’s National Examinations Council (NECO) announced the results of the 2026 Internal Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) on Thursday, with Registrar Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi delivering the figures from the council’s headquarters in Minna.
The council recorded 1,378,048 candidates registered for the exam, comprising 682,352 males and 695,696 females. Of those, 1,371,992 actually sat for the examination – 678,903 males and 693,089 females.
According to the registrar, 804,948 candidates – 58.67 percent of those who sat – achieved five credits or more, including the core subjects English language and mathematics. A broader measure showed that 1,162,118 candidates, representing 84.70 percent, earned five credits irrespective of performance in English and mathematics.
NECO also reported a significant drop in examination malpractice, with the number of candidates implicated falling from 3,878 in 2025 to 1,406 in 2026. The council noted that 334 candidates with special needs – including hearing and visual impairments, albinism, autism and low vision – participated in this year’s internal SSCE.
The results were released 63 days after the examination concluded, covering candidates both within Nigeria and abroad.
