On Saturday, a National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officer drowned while pursuing suspected drug offenders into the River Ethiope in Obiaruku, Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State.

The operation began when a suspected drug offender was apprehended on the opposite bank of the river and, in an attempt to escape, leapt into the water near the River Ethiope Bridge. NDLEA officers chasing the suspect entered the river in pursuit. One officer was swept away and later recovered from the water, while a second officer was rescued and taken to a hospital for treatment.

Community members reported that traditional drowning rites were performed before the deceased officer’s remains were handed over to authorities. The rites included the offering of a goat and other items.

NDLEA officials confirmed that an investigation into the incident would be carried out. Police Public Relations Officer Bright Edafe urged residents to remain calm amid the tragedy.
