Names of Niger miners who died in NSCDC custody released [FULL LIST]

Thirty‑seven suspected illegal miners were confirmed dead after being held by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State. The names of the victims were released by the Daily Post on Friday, following a series of protests and calls for accountability.

The miners were arrested during anti‑illegal mining operations carried out by the NSCDC on 15 and 16 September 2026. The deaths occurred on 17 September, shortly after the arrests, and the bodies were taken to the General Hospital in Minna for medical examination to determine the exact cause of death.

NSCDC officials said the deaths were likely the result of a suspected disease outbreak, but the investigation is ongoing. Some survivors were transported to the hospital for treatment, while others were reunited with their families after the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) collected their statements.

In response to the incident, Governor Mohammed Bago imposed a 24‑hour curfew across the state and urged calm amid growing public concern. The incident has sparked widespread protests among local youths and heightened scrutiny of the NSCDC’s operations.
