More than half of lawyers in the Australian state of Victoria are now using artificial intelligence in their legal practices, a new study has revealed. The research indicates that 55% of legal professionals in the region have integrated AI tools into their workflows, marking a significant increase from the 37% reported in the previous year.

Despite the rapid adoption of these technologies, the study found that efficiency gains have not been as substantial as initially expected. Consequently, only just over a quarter of the surveyed lawyers stated that they have reduced their client fees as a direct result of the productivity improvements offered by AI.

The report highlights a growing challenge for legal practitioners: the rise of clients seeking advice from AI chatbots. Lawyers reported that this trend has added to their existing workload, as they are frequently required to correct errors and inaccuracies generated by these automated systems.

The findings suggest a disconnect between the widespread implementation of AI tools and the tangible financial benefits for consumers in the legal sector. While the technology is becoming a standard part of legal operations in Victoria, the anticipated cost savings for clients remain limited.

Research finds 55% of lawyers are using AI in legal practices, up from 37% last year, though efficiency gains aren’t as high as expected.
