The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has installed a new commandant, Abdulhamid Kabara, for its Niger State command following the death of 37 suspected illegal miners in custody.
Kabara replaced Suberu Aniviye, who was suspended after the fatal incident that occurred in Minna, the state capital, on Thursday. The NSCDC spokesperson for Niger State, Abubakar Muti, announced the change on Saturday, noting that Kabara officially assumed office on Friday, September 18.
The assumption of office comes at a particularly sensitive period for the Command, following the unfortunate deaths of some persons arrested in connection with suspected illegal mining activities in the State.
In a statement, Muti said Kabara expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives and extended his heartfelt sympathy to the families of the deceased and everyone affected by the incident.
“At a moment like this, beyond arrests, investigations, enforcement and the fight against illegal mining, we must remember one fundamental truth: every human life matters,” Kabara said, underscoring the corps’ commitment to its statutory duties while prioritising the protection of human life.
The incident, which saw 37 suspects die in NSCDC custody, has prompted a review of the organisation’s procedures in Niger State and the appointment of a new commandant to steer the command through this sensitive period.
