In a fitting farewell, Lionel Messi capped off his international career with a goal as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0 in a friendly match in Buenos Aires.
After the final whistle, the Argentine star reflected on his time with the national team, saying it had been “the most wonderful thing that can happen to you.”
The match, held at the Estadio Monumental, saw Messi contribute to a comfortable win that marked the end of a career spanning more than a decade and 170 appearances for the national side.
Messi’s goal, one of the few he scored in the game, came in the second half and helped seal the victory for the hosts.
“Playing for Argentina is the most wonderful thing that can happen to you,” Messi told reporters after the match.
