The BMW PGA Championship, one of the European Tour's flagship events, saw McIlroy miss out on victory due to a poor final round of putting.
With the Race to Dubai points race still in play, McIlroy is now chasing American golfer Patrick Reed, who leads the standings.
McIlroy, a former major champion from Northern Ireland, will need to perform strongly in the remaining tournaments to overtake Reed.
As the season approaches its climax, both players will be looking to secure the coveted title that crowns the European Tour's top performer.
