Senator Kabiru Garba Marafa, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for governor of Zamfara State, announced on Wednesday in Gusau that he would step down if his administration fails to meet a 75 percent security target within two years of office. The pledge came as part of a media briefing ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“If I am elected as governor and fail to achieve at least 75 per cent of my administration’s security objectives within two years, I will resign,” Marafa told reporters. He said the commitment was a personal promise to take responsibility for the state’s security record.
Marafa, a former senator with long experience in Zamfara politics, said his decision to run was driven by a desire to restore peace and law and order in a state that has been plagued by banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities. He added that his knowledge of local security challenges would help him lead effective interventions.
While he could not disclose the specifics of his security strategy—citing the sensitivity of the information—Marafa explained that the state would focus on responsibilities within its purview, while expecting the Federal Government to address matters under its jurisdiction. “I have been in the system and I know exactly what to do if I am elected as governor of Zamfara State,” he said.
The pledge was also reported by Channels Television following Marafa’s Wednesday media engagement in Gusau, underscoring the growing scrutiny of political leaders over the state’s persistent insecurity.
