Baroness Brown, the chairwoman of the UK’s wildfire oversight committee, warned that lives could be lost unless the government steps up its response to the country’s most destructive wildfire season on record.
The year saw an unprecedented number of fires across England and Wales, prompting calls for a comprehensive review of how the country prepares for and manages such emergencies.
“There must be better training and planning,” Baroness Brown said, urging authorities to strengthen the skills and coordination of fire‑fighting teams.
As the committee’s chairwoman, she highlighted the need for systematic improvements in both the training of personnel and the strategic planning of resources to cope with future wildfire threats.
Her remarks come amid growing concern that the current approach may be insufficient to protect communities and natural habitats from the escalating risk of wildfires.
