LAUTECH Don Warns Plant Expert Shortage Threatens Drug Safety in Nigeria
A lecturer from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) has cautioned about the potential dangers arising from a lack of plant taxonomists in Nigeria.
According to the source, the professor emphasized that this shortage threatens both drug safety, particularly in the realm of herbal medicine, and biodiversity conservation within the country.
Plant Taxonomists Crucial for Drug Safety and Biodiversity Conservation
Nigeria, as a populous African nation, relies heavily on herbal medicine for healthcare needs. The absence of plant taxonomists, who classify and study plants, could have severe implications for drug safety and the protection of the nation's diverse flora.
Drug Safety at Risk
The professor's warning highlights the potential risks associated with the lack of expertise in plant taxonomy. Inadequate knowledge of plants could lead to misidentification and misuse of medicinal plants, potentially resulting in harmful side effects on patients.
Impact on Biodiversity Conservation
Biodiversity is a crucial aspect of Nigeria's ecosystem, and the professor's concerns extend to the preservation of the nation's flora. A dearth of plant taxonomists could lead to the loss of unique and valuable plant species, negatively impacting the country's ecological balance.
Addressing the Issue
To address this issue, the lecturer suggests increasing financial incentives and research opportunities for experts in the field of plant taxonomy. By nurturing a skilled workforce, Nigeria can safeguard its citizens' health and safeguard its rich biodiversity.
