Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, has officially refuted online reports alleging that only one dialysis machine is functional at the Alimosho General Hospital in Igando. In a statement released on Monday, Abayomi clarified that the hospital’s Dialysis Centre currently operates eight fully functional machines, directly contradicting the viral claims.
The commissioner detailed that six of the machines are dedicated to general dialysis patients, while the remaining two are specifically designated for patients living with HIV or hepatitis. Abayomi explained that this separation was implemented in strict accordance with infection prevention and control guidelines to ensure patient safety.
“The Dialysis Centre at Alimosho General Hospital, Igando has 8 dialysis machines, and all 8 are working,” Abayomi said.
He disclosed that dialysis treatments at the facility begin at 6:00 AM and continue until the final scheduled patient has been attended to, with services occasionally extending until midnight. The extended operating schedule is designed to ensure that no patient requiring dialysis is denied access to treatment. The facility supports up to 200 dialysis sessions every month, backed by a dedicated standby generator to maintain power supply.
Abayomi noted that residents of Lagos State have access to dialysis services at several other government-owned health facilities. These include Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), General Hospital Lagos, General Hospital Gbagada, Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Yaba, and the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute Metta.
Furthermore, the commissioner revealed that the state government is currently developing additional dialysis centres in various parts of Lagos to further expand access to these critical services. He reaffirmed the Lagos State Ministry of Health’s commitment to ensuring residents have reliable access to dialysis and other essential medical care, stating, “The health of Lagosians is our priority at the Lagos State Ministry of Health.”
