At least 24 people were killed when a bus carrying church mourners collided on Kenya’s Nairobi‑Mombasa Highway, officials said, prompting the government to announce a crackdown on road safety.

The victims were members of a local congregation travelling to a funeral service when the bus overturned on the busy highway that links the capital Nairobi with the coastal city of Mombasa. Emergency responders recovered the bodies of the mourners at the scene, while several others were taken to hospitals with injuries.

The tragedy comes only weeks after another serious crash on the same stretch of road claimed 17 lives, highlighting a spate of fatal accidents on one of Kenya’s most heavily trafficked routes.

Kenyan authorities responded by vowing to intensify enforcement of traffic regulations, increase inspections of commercial vehicles and launch public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing reckless driving.

Road safety remains a major challenge in Kenya, where the World Health Organization reports that traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death, and the Nairobi‑Mombasa Highway is known for high traffic volumes and frequent collisions.

Investigations into the recent bus crash are ongoing, with police and transport officials working to determine the exact cause and to implement measures that could prevent similar incidents in the future.
