Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has postponed the World Tourism Day celebration that was slated for 27 September 2026 in Gembu, the headquarters of Sardauna Local Government Area, citing a recent communal crisis in the state.
The decision follows a violent disturbance in Mbara Village, Mbamnga District, where clashes between Mambilla and Fulani‑Geroje residents led to loss of lives and the destruction of property.
The postponement was announced in a statement issued on Friday by Chief Gebon Timothy Kataps, the Secretary to the Taraba State Government, which said the move was made in solidarity with families who have lost loved ones and other victims of the incident.
In the statement, the governor’s office emphasized that the action aligns with Governor Kefas’s commitment to maintaining peace and his administration’s stance against violence throughout the state.
Governor Kefas directed security agencies to move immediately into the affected communities, restore normalcy, and ensure sustained peace, while also ordering the identification, arrest and prosecution of all persons responsible for the violence, irrespective of their status.
He further instructed the Sardauna Local Government Council, the Traditional Council and other stakeholders to intensify dialogue and cooperate with security forces to prevent any further escalation, urging residents to remain calm, vigilant and continue lawful activities.
The governor called on citizens to report any suspicious activities to the nearest security formation as part of their civic responsibility.
