The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that it has received more than 5,400 claims and objections concerning its preliminary voter register as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
INEC said the submissions relate to discrepancies identified by individuals and groups in the draft register, which is a key step in the nation’s electoral preparation. The commission is tasked with verifying the accuracy of voter data before finalising the list that will be used for the upcoming polls.
According to the commission, the volume of claims exceeds 5,400, reflecting widespread public engagement with the registration process. INEC has indicated that each objection will be examined in accordance with its established procedures for addressing such concerns.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, holds national elections every four years, with the Independent National Electoral Commission overseeing voter registration, ballot collation and result declaration. The 2027 elections will determine the next president, members of the National Assembly and state-level officials.
INEC affirmed that it will continue to process the objections, update the register where necessary and publish a revised list ahead of the official voter registration deadline. The commission’s efforts aim to ensure that the final register is comprehensive and credible for the 2027 electoral cycle.
