Minister of Works David Umahi publicly criticised Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi on Wednesday after a video of his remarks went viral, saying he “hate[s] hearing” Obi’s repeated invitation for Nigerians to “go and verify” his statements.
Umahi, speaking in the video, expressed irritation at the phrase, which he said Obi uses constantly when discussing his records, policies and claims about governance.
Obi’s “go and verify” mantra is intended to challenge the public to examine his assertions against available records, documents and other sources rather than accept them at face value.
The candidate has framed the approach as an invitation to scrutiny, particularly when speaking about his tenure as governor, Nigeria’s economy, public finances and policy choices.
No response from Obi or his campaign was reported at the time of publication.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, frequently witnesses vigorous political debate as candidates vie for the presidency, and Umahi’s comments add another layer to the contesting narratives ahead of the election.
