Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo said his view of entertainer Charles Oputa – better known as Charlie Boy – has shifted from indifference to a modest respect after witnessing the artist’s care for his parents. Obasanjo recalled first describing Charlie Boy as “Jaga Jaga” and admitting he knew little about the flamboyant performer, saying, “Well, Charlie Boy is so jaga jaga that I don’t know anything about him.”
Contrast with his late father
He contrasted that impression with his high regard for the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, whom he called “one of the Nigerians I respected during my lifetime,” adding, “He has a good father, Justice Oputa. Oh, what a great man. I wish Charlie Boy had resembled him.”
Changing view after seeing the care he gave
Obasanji said his opinion began to change when he visited Justice Oputa at Charlie Boy’s home and saw the entertainer looking after his father, and later his mother, who he described as “a great humorous woman.” He noted that the consistent care “made me start changing my mind about Charlie Boy.”
Final assessment
When asked about Charlie Boy’s unconventional appearance, the entertainer explained it was part of how he “makes chop‑chop,” a point Obasanjo said showed the artist’s intelligence. He concluded, “So now I like him a bit, not too much.”
