Patrick Clancy has spoken publicly for the first time about the profound grief following the deaths of his three children, revealing that he once felt he had no purpose in life and did not expect to reach his 35th birthday. In a recent interview with *60 Minutes*, the 36-year-old father reflected on the trauma of losing 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan, stating, "There was a time where I didn't think I would live to see my 35th birthday... And I was completely fine with it."
The interview comes in the wake of a mistrial in the case of Clancy’s ex-wife, Lindsay Clancy, who was charged with the children’s killings. A jury in July failed to reach a verdict, and the court has yet to determine whether a retrial will take place. During the trial, Lindsay’s legal team argued that she was suffering from dangerous postpartum psychosis and could not be held criminally responsible for her actions. The case has generated intense national debate regarding the intersection of mental illness and criminal fault, as well as the failures of the medical system in supporting mothers.
Clancy described the period leading up to the tragedy in October 2022, noting that Lindsay had been struggling with severe sleep deprivation, deep depression, and intrusive thoughts. He recounted coming home from an errand to find Lindsay in the backyard, injured and paralyzed after jumping from a window, while he discovered his children strangled in the basement. Cora and Dawson were pronounced dead at the scene, while Callan was airlifted to Boston Children's Hospital, where his heart continued to beat for four days before he died in Clancy’s arms.
Despite the public scrutiny and online speculation that has surrounded him since the trial began, Clancy stated that he chose to publicly forgive Lindsay. He noted that while headlines labeled her a "monster," he believed her mental illness was the root cause of the tragedy. "I think if people said, 'She did a horrible thing,' I think everyone could agree with that," Clancy said. "But I believe that it was her mental illness that caused that."
