Gunmen attacked Lafagu village in the Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State, north‑western Nigeria, on Sunday, killing the village head, according to the state police.
Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer SP Bashir Usman confirmed the killing in a text message, noting that “some arrests have been made in respect of the incident” and that further details would be released when available.
Residents who spoke to the reporter gave a different account of the attackers, saying they were unsure whether the perpetrators were bandits or members of an armed ethnic militia. Tukur Abubakar Kaoje, a local source, said the Fulani, Kambarawa and Bargawa communities have lived together in the area for decades.
“Yes, the village head was beheaded in Lafagu, but we are not sure the killers are bandits or Lakurawa. It was allegedly carried out by the armed ethnic militia,” Kaoje told the correspondent.
Kaoje alleged that recent infiltration of some communities by Lakurawa fighters—accused of cattle rustling and kidnapping—has heightened tensions. He said members of the Bargawa and Kambarawa communities formed an armed group that targeted Fulani residents, and that the militia recently invaded Boya village, where several Fulani were reportedly killed.
The source described the situation in Lafagu and neighbouring villages as “tense” and called for urgent government intervention, warning that failure to act could lead to further escalation. Police said the investigation into the beheading remains ongoing.
