During a sermon at the September Holy Ghost night, Pastor Jide Akiode, an assistant general overseer, urged church members to keep hope alive in the “ember months” of the year. Speaking to a congregation in Nigeria, he drew on biblical stories and his own experience of long‑term barrenness to illustrate that God remembers those who cry out for help.
“The last few months of 2026 feel like a test of faith,” Akiode said. “If you find yourself helpless—whether it’s a career setback, a health challenge or a longing for family—remember that the Lord is a helper for the helpless.” He described the ember months as a time when many people give up, yet it is also a period when God’s memory is most attentive.
A key illustration came from the Book of Acts. Akiode recounted how Paul and his companions were battered by a storm while sailing from Crete, throwing cargo and tackle overboard in a desperate attempt to survive. “When they lost hope, Paul urged them to keep courage, saying that only the ship would be destroyed, not the crew,” he explained. The passage, Acts 27:18‑24, was used to remind listeners that faith can sustain them even when circumstances seem dire.
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:5‑6
He also cited Job 8:5‑7, noting that “if you look to God and plead with the Almighty, if you are pure and upright, even now he will rouse himself on your behalf and restore you to your rightful place.” These verses were presented as a call to humility, obedience, and a personal relationship with God.
To illustrate the power of faith, Akiode shared his own story of being called barren for 19 years and four months. “A woman who hosted me on a mission asked what clothes I should buy for my children, even though I had none,” he recalled. “I received a set of clothes, kept them, and when my children finally arrived, we used them.” He credited his hope and the word of the Lord, quoting Deuteronomy 7:14, “You shall be blessed above all people.”
In closing, Akiode urged the congregation to “keep hope alive,” reminding them that even when mocked or faced with helplessness, a steadfast faith in the Lord provides the strength to overcome. The sermon emphasized that the ember months are not a time to give up, but a period where God’s remembrance and grace can transform present struggles into future celebrations.
