Popular Nigerian content creator and relationship commentator, Emmanuel Obruste, better known as GehGeh, has responded to widespread criticism following the circulation of videos showing him at a traditional wedding ceremony, insisting that he never advised Nigerians against marriage.
The controversy erupted after GehGeh shared clips from the event on his X account, where he appeared alongside a woman dressed in matching burgundy traditional attire. The social media personality was seen wearing a flowing agbada adorned with black bead necklaces, while an invitation card displayed in one of the videos identified the couple as Mary and Prosper, with the ceremony scheduled for July 26.
Captioning one of the videos, GehGeh wrote, “So I no fit represent my brother wey dey abroad?” The remark, however, did little to convince many social media users, as speculation intensified over whether the ceremony was his own traditional wedding or that of another person.
The videos quickly generated heated reactions online, with critics accusing the outspoken influencer of contradicting the relationship advice that helped build his online reputation. GehGeh has long been known for offering blunt opinions on dating, marriage and finances, with many followers interpreting his previous comments as discouraging men from getting married.
Several social media personalities also weighed in on the controversy. Content creator Carter Efe claimed GehGeh’s relationship advice contributed to the collapse of his 12-year relationship, while other commentators questioned the credibility of his public persona if the wedding was indeed his.
Responding to the criticism, GehGeh maintained that his views had been misunderstood, stressing that he had never publicly advised anyone against marriage. “I never for once told y’all not to get married. Did I? If yes, show me a video of me telling you not to marry,” he wrote on X.
He further argued that many Nigerians misunderstand how social media works, adding that online content should not always be taken at face value. “Nigerians really don’t understand how social media works. If you know how to use it properly, you will never lack,” he added.
The renewed attention surrounding GehGeh comes shortly after he disclosed in a recent interview that he has four baby mothers and is expecting children with two other women, a revelation that also triggered widespread debate across social media platforms.
Although the true nature of the ceremony remains unclear, the viral videos have once again placed GehGeh at the centre of public conversation, with supporters and critics continuing to argue over whether his personal actions align with the opinions that made him one of Nigeria’s most talked-about online commentators.
