As the holiday season draws near, Cameroon’s food‑security planners warn of a looming fish shortage that could affect households across the country. On 4 November 2026, Minister of Commerce Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana convened a strategic consultation in Yaoundé with sectoral authorities, local fishers and major importers, including Congelcam CEO and Senator Sylvestre Ngouchinghe, to secure market supply.

The meeting followed a September alert from Congelcam that highlighted potential supply gaps. In response, the government has taken decisive action to guarantee adequate fish imports for the coming months.

According to the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries (MINEPIA), Cameroon’s annual fish demand is estimated at 500 000 tonnes, while domestic production—encompassing artisanal, industrial and aquaculture output—reached only 259 000 tonnes in 2025. The shortfall is therefore 241 000 tonnes.

To bridge this structural gap, MINEPIA has allocated nearly 200 000 tonnes of import quotas for 2026, distributed among 52 operators. Congelcam will receive 130 000 tonnes, or 66 % of the total, a share justified by its logistical and financial capacity to meet demand.

These measures aim to prevent a fish shortage during the festive period, ensuring that households can continue to purchase the staple protein that is a key part of the national diet.
