The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a stern warning to politicians and their supporters, urging them to avoid reckless driving, speeding and overloading during election campaigns. The warning comes as authorities seek to curb the rising number of road crashes and casualties that often occur when campaign vehicles are pushed beyond safe limits.
In a statement released by the FRSC, officials highlighted that campaign vehicles are frequently overloaded with campaign materials, supporters and sometimes even campaign staff. The resulting excess weight, combined with high speeds, increases the risk of accidents on Nigeria’s busy roads.
“We are calling on all political actors to observe road safety rules during campaign activities,” the FRSC said. “Reckless driving, speeding and overloading are major contributors to road crashes and casualties.”
The warning follows a series of incidents in which campaign vehicles were involved in collisions, leading to injuries and fatalities. The FRSC’s message is part of a broader effort to promote safer road use across the country, particularly during the heightened traffic conditions that accompany election periods.
